After the StormTuesday, April 15, 2008 by Steve Hill

This storm painting was done from a different angle yesterday evening, looking out from our balcony in Albufeira, Portugal. The seas built-up to about an 18 foot surf crashing the beaches, making for very dramatic light and wind conditions.

This morning, however, it is raining feircely, the sun has disappeared and the wind is still howling across the Atlantic. In the Pacific Northwest, I refer to this as “Rain air” painting, done from an indoor perch, looking outside. I will be working today from photos taken yesterday in a sweet little fishing town, Farragudo, near Portiamo, just 40 km west of here. I remain hopeful for better weather conditions to get outside with easel and painting materials, as we will be here through Saturday.

Loved your description of meeting the Basque couple and renovation of the bldg in northern Spain! You are exactly the kind of person who could strike up a new friendship, and not on the merit of your beautiful paintings alone ...which are gorgeous, by the way! Barbara

Hi Steve, I so envy you being where you are and doing gorgeous art! Have you been to Selema yet, a very small village on the western Algarve that I would love to return to one day. It is just a small fishing village on a hill, serene and picturesque. Enjoy the rest of your time there! Cheers, Judy from Cloverdale BC

Hey Steve: Beautiful paintings. Really like the concept of "rain air", since I know it so intimately. You guys have a great time. As if there is any question of it.... Sara

Hello Steve & Judy- Storms? It snowed here in Seattle yesterday, AND we had thunder and lightening. And hail and sleet. Your storm painting could almost be set here in the Pacific Northwest. Bill & June are doing great on the yacht to Alaska. They're in Prince Rupert today, waiting out bad weather similar to what you've got in Portugal (mariners call those huge seas "a little lumpy"). The chef-prepared meals are "fabulous" according to Bill; he's even buying more expensive wine to keep up with the quality! AND the crabbing is great. Now you're jealous, huh? Meanwhile, I toil in the vineyards of education. It's WASL week, Judy. Bet you don't miss that! -Migael
