About this work

Painted en plein air during the Wallowa Valley Festival for the Arts near Joseph Oregon. Loved the cool dark colors of the river back-lit by strong morning sun through the distant trees - creating a timeless rhythm.

This is near where Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indian Tribe headquartered, between Hell’s Canyon (Snake River) and Lewiston, Idaho to the north. It’s a hauntingly beautiful river canyon in very steep formidable terrain. This view offered a back lit sunrise at the top of the long cataract through shadowy rocks.

My goal was to capture that back light while presenting the dark shadowy rocks and water-in-motion.
