About this work

West Flanders, Belgium. This windmill is still in production (grain) and certainly one of the most serene stops along the canal from the north sea to Bruges. The original was built in 1481, but destroyed by a severe wind in the 1800's then rebuilt at this site in 1840. It was restored again in 1985 when it also became a protected monument. I loved the light and reflections in the water, of course, but more than anything, the massive structure that houses all the enormous, hand crafted working components that make a windmill function like clockwork.
