Submarine and Seasmoke

Fog San Juan Islands Sunrise

Painted from the artists' property on Swifts Bay, Lopez Island on a very foggy/misty morning. "Leo's Reef" (small light in the distance) often resembles a sumarine just surfacing or ready to dive, with periscope trained on our beach. In reality, it merely marks the reef out there (from local lore) named after the first known mariner to sink his boat when he hit the rocks at night. Several others have followed suit, so clearly a good marker was needed. I still like the idea of a permanent submarine out there on the water . . . and so do my grandchildren.
